The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live was one of three spinoffs of The Walking Dead that dropped after the flagship show ended. It finally revealed the fate of Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes, and also heavily involved Danai Gurira’s Michonne.
The series originally aired on AMC, but interest has boomed recently since its Netflix debut. Indeed, due to the overwhelming popularity of the show on the streaming service, the creators may be tempted to revisit it for another season.
Walking Dead Franchise is Booming
It’s hard to think of a television franchise that has expanded quite as much as The Walking Dead has. There have been five main spinoff series from the original show, along with representation across other media.
Among the most recent offerings, there are a few casino slots that have helped the franchise get in front of a much wider audience. These include The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead Cash Collect, which are both among the most popular games at iGaming sites.
Along with The Ones Who Live, there were two other hit spinoffs after the main series ended. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon explored the fate of arguably the franchise’s most beloved character, and The Walking Dead: Dead City, put Negan and Maggie together in a brand new setting. Both were praised by critics and have led to second seasons.
More Content With Rick and Michonne to Come?
The Ones Who Live is the only one of the three spinoffs that hasn’t been renewed for a second season yet. It was originally intended as a way to wrap up Rick and Michonne’s storylines, as both had been left open in the main series. While it was disappointing that their fates hadn’t been addressed in The Walking Dead, this offering acted as a way for fans to get closure.
It was recently reported that The Ones Who Live has been a massive hit on Netflix, with a total of 11.7 million viewing hours in its first week on the platform. Because of this overwhelmingly positive response, AMC may be tempted to create more content in the spinoff. Even though Rick and Michonne’s character arcs were tied up nicely, there’s still potential to explore what happens to them in the future.
Andrew Lincoln Has a New Project in the Pipeline
There’s a chance, though, that Lincoln will be seeking to move on from his association with Rick now after more than 111 episodes as the character. There’s no doubt that starring in The Walking Dead was great for the 51-year-old’s career, but he’ll now be hoping to expand his horizons in other projects.
Lincoln’s next project is Cold Water on ITV, a new six-episode series from David Ireland. He’ll star alongside Ewen Bremner, Indira Varma and Eve Myles, but there’s not much other information about the series yet. If it’s a hit, it will show the world that Lincoln is still capable of playing different roles, and it may make it easier for the actor to go back to playing Rick between other projects.
There’s no news about another season of The Ones Who Live Yet, but fans will be hoping that this isn’t the last they’ve seen of Rick and Michonne.
